The Mangia Trattoria in Kenosha, recently remodeled and renamed Mangia Wine Bar, is famous chef Tony Mantuano's first restaurant in the United States. In 1988, he opened it together with his brother Gino and his father Gene 'Gig' Mantuano in his hometown Kenosha, Wisconsin. Currently, his nephew Tre Mantuano has been promoted to Restaurant Manager at Mangia Wine Bar, whereas Jason Gorman has been named Mangia's new chef after having worked at Mantuano's Italian restaurant in Miami.
Gorman is best known for his commitment to local cuisine and regional ingredients. Thus, Mangia's menu features Wisconsin parmesan, Wisconsin burrata and ricotta produced by the local cheese factory Clock Shadow Creamery.
What to eat at Mangia?
Mangia's menu is not particulary rich in quantity, but features a fine selection of classic Italian dishes, reinterpreted in a regional way by using local products. For dinner, you can choose out of 5 different pasta dishes and 4 different main courses, for example:
Pasta dishes (first courses)
- Strozzapreti with zucchini, basil, Wisconsin burrata and toasted garlic
- Gnocchi with spring peas, Clock Shadow Creamery ricotta sauce and crispy prosciutto
- Tagliatelle della Nonna 2.0 with Maple Creek Farms braised pork, San Marzano tomatoes and pecorino
Secondi (main courses)
- Rosemary Chicken with fava beans, asparagus and River Valley mushrooms
- Tagliata (sliced culotte steak) with sorrel salmoriglio, baby arugula and Wisconsin parmesan
Mangia is also well known for its pizzas. The wood-fired oven is located outside the kitchen to allow customers to watch their pizza being prepared and to create a warm and cozy atmosphere in the restaurant. All pizzas are prepared exclusively with handcrafted Wisconsin artisanal mozzarella.
Jason Gorman's wife Jennifer is Mangia's pastry chef and serves Italian desserts like the classic Tiramisù or White Chocolate Biscotti, but also American-inspired desserts like a Peanut Butter Cheesecake.
Mangia features high-end Italian cuisine with fresh, genuine and mostly regional products in a familiar atmosphere and with a great service.
